The clarity of the lens isn’t great. You can see that it looks hazy and the edges turn out quite soft. This is more obvious at the 80mm/160mm end (portrayed). At 28mm/56mm the lack of sharpness isn’t as obvious and not as important.

Here the bokeh is round but it’s irregular enough not to distract from the subject. The depth of field is also shallow enough to separate the subject from the background which, for me, qualifies this lens as a good kit lens with a macro capability – can’t ask for much more, especially for the price!…

You can see that at the wide-end, this lens is clear and reasonably sharp. Photos from it won’t stop the press but they’re clear enough for me to use for video and on shoots.

You would be able to get a close up shot of the insect/subject as well as create an environment around it using a wider view of the background. Since this lens has a significant crop factor (around 2x), the photos on the 35mm end work out as 60-70mm. While not being wide-angle macro, they’re different enough from the 100mm to be interesting to try.
