The Vivitar 28-80mm is why I sold my Canon 24-105mm. The Canon lens was just a little unnecessary for me. Sure, autofocus is great, sharpness is pretty good (worse than the 100mm though!) and it’s a versatile focal range, but for the price – it really isn’t all that impressive. I got this lens for free from a friend who was getting rid of some old SLRs. That, with a £5 adapter I already owned, gave me a reasonably good replacement for literally 1% of the price..
It has a neat macro feature at the 80mm end which gives it a small edge over the Canon on the versatility front. I may be biased as I do love my macro photography. 80mm is also a good focal length for portraiture, although I’ve not used this lens for that purpose yet.
