  • Glass 08. Helios 85-210mm F3.8 | Test

For a manual lens this is very sharp, at least in the middle. You can see that on the edges the focus softens but again, it’s just another effect you can use to your advantage.

This is possibly my favourite among all my manual lenses. It has many limitations, like the 1.5m minimum focusing distance at anything but 210mm but the macro ability is quite hand. Unfortunately these lenses are very easy to break because of how front-heavy they are – my 2nd one of these is now out of…

The lens is also useful for candid, walkabout photos like this one.

Here’s a shallow depth of field “macro” close-up from around 1m distance. At 70mm the shot is wide enough to capture some of the surroundings as well as the subject.

Sharpness is slightly worse than tha 50mm but for my purposes, it’s a nice lens and a good one to use as a backup, and its minimum focusing distance is smaller than the Tamron making it useful for closeups of close subjects.

Another lens that was gifted to me from someone getting rid of old cameras. It’s slightly disappointing that the range only reaches 210mm and not 300mm as with my Tamron. On the upside, the lens has a macro feature which makes up for the range.

Portrait macro really seems to work with this lens. Again, here is that wide perspective and background separation.

Here I again played with the wider angle and the depth of field to put this roof of a greenhouse in a new perspective.

I tried to test this lens with nature photography which is one of my favourites. As an added challenge, I tried taking photos just after sunset, when it’s too dark for most of my other lenses but not so much this one. I think the ISO here was 1600 – you can see a bit…
